Haines has one of the most idyllic settings in all Alaska. It lies nestled along the shores of Portage Cove with a backdrop of glacially carved mountains. On this round-trip journey by sea and air, you'll come face-to-face with this community's rich historic and cultural diversity.

From Skagway, there is a one-hour scenic cruise to Haines through the narrow Lynn Canal, North America's longest and deepest fjord. Enjoy spectacular vistas from the outer deck as mountains tower skywards directly from the sea. Your captain and attentive crew will explain this fjord's important role in the development of Haines and Skagway.

On arrival in Haines, six-seated horse drawn carriages await for the 10-minute ride to the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center. In the charming company of an interpretive guide, you are about to discover an extraordinary collection of Tlingit artifacts, embodying a pictorial and written history of the Chilkat Valley's native Alaskan life. Ponder the rare and striking design of the Chilkat blankets and see how ordinary possessions became works of art inside a tribal house. Articles of clothing, cooking utensils and weapons all display the artistry and perception of their makers.

Next, you'll take a leisurely horse and carriage journey through the historic Fort William Seward site, which dates back to 1904. Images of the past come alive as you hear tales of the soldiers who were stationed at this northernmost military outpost.

Your return to Skagway will feature flightseeing over some of this region's most impressive scenery. Feast your eyes on views of the northern Inside Passage, with its glaciers, ice fields, and the Chilkat River Valley. Your pilot will keep you closely informed as you soar above the spectacular views.

This is a program you won't want to miss!
