From Crystal Symphony's pier, you'll take a van for a guided look at historic Skagway.
view the residential district and ascent to the Overlook for views encompassing the entire
valley and cruise ship docks. You'll then head six miles through rustic wilderness to the valley of Dyea and the
Klondike Gold Rush National Park. There you'll be fitted with a riding helmet and given
riding tips, advice on horse behavior and instruction on how to react in unexpected
situations. Shortly afterwards, you'll head off on the trail through Dyea's beautiful valley.
You'll maintain a steady walk in single file, as cantering or running the horses is
strictly forbidden. One guide will lead the group, while the other will ride alongside to
ensure that everyone is riding correctly and their tack is properly adjusted. This guide
will also provide insight into the fascinating sourdough history of this remote area,
which at one time was filled with stampeders in search of gold. Soon you'll reach the open flats of Dyea Valley where, after dismounting, you may have
your photo taken or wander down to the stream where salmon spawn during the season. Your
return is through the dense forest beside the Slide Cemetery where over 160 gold miners
were buried during the great Klondike Gold Rush. Back at the hitching post, you'll compare your experience of this unique adventure with
shipboard friends. Enjoy freshly-prepared alder-wood smoked salmon pâté, crackers, soda,
coffee or tea before returning by van to the ship. Approximately 3-1/2 hours. |
