Leave the gold rush pace of Skagway behind as you fly beside cascading waterfalls along
the majestic coastal ranges en route to Haines and the Chilkat Valley. Soon after touchdown, you'll be greeted by resident naturalists. Opportunities abound
to photograph bald eagles in their natural habitat. Powerful spotting scopes provide
close-up views of America's national symbol, the proud Bald Eagle, and their nests.
Sighting of mountain goat, waterfowl, seal, sea lion and porpoise are also frequently
highlighted. Your journey will continue beside the enchanting Chilkoot river, which teems with
seasonal salmon runs. This is prime bear habitat and the ancestral home of the Tlingit
people. Bonsai-like trees grow from boulders in the water while flowers and berries line
the river banks. After a refreshing stop beside a picturesque mountain lake, you'll enter the world's
largest temperate rain forest. As you stroll beneath the forest canopy, your guide will
reveal the diversity of life found among the old-growth trees and discuss the important
relationships between species. You'll discover the wild edibles of this area and take home
a memento of delicious hand-picked wild berry jam. A seasoned local pilot will then take you on a spectacular flight over the majestic
world of mountains and ice back to Skagway. There are superb photographic opportunities as
you soar above azure blue crevasses in the massive rivers of ice. Look for mountain goats
on steep rock shoulders or a harem of se lions along the shoreline. keep watch also for
bear and moose in the lush river valleys. Approximately 4 hours. |
