Despite Singapore's continuing development, there are marvelous edifices and enclaves which tell of a bygone era.

An air-conditioned coach will whisk you to Chinatown's Thian hock Keng Temple.   when completed in 1841 this Temple of Heavenly Happiness stood on the city's waterfront.  It was then a refuge for many Chinese immigrants when they first arrived in Singapore.

Ancestral tablets honoring these pioneers stand in the courtyard while fierce gods and massive lions guard the entrance.  Continue then to the superbly restored National Museum which houses the Aw family's (of Tiger Balm fame) magnificent jade collection.

Shortly afterwards, you'll step aboard a "trishaw," successor to the famous rickshaw.  You  are headed for the "Grand lady of Singapore," Raffles Hotel, which has reopened after a multi-million dollar renovation.  Over the years it has hosted many prominent visitors including writers and world personalities.  Sip a cool drink at the Long Bar and ponder the nostalgia of yesteryear before returning by coach to the ship.

Approximately 4 hours.
