The Victorian Arts Center is the largest visual and performing arts complex in the world. Just as the Sydney Opera House is renowned for its dramatic exterior architecture, the Arts Center's interior is equally eye-catching. It stands on the banks of the Yarra River within nearly 1,000 acres of gardens. Works by Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Pissaro, Cezanne, Manet, and Matisse combine with Australian, Aboriginal and Asian art to form an impressive collection. The Concert Hall's impressive interior appears to have been carved out of a hillside, with colors inspired by Australia's vast mineral and gemstone deposits. A magnificent chandelier cascades through five stories to the foyer, which is filled with art works by Australia's greatest painters. Your walking tour will feature several highlights of this complex. Back aboard your coach, you'll proceed to the innovative Colonial Tramcar Restaurant. This burgundy-colored 1927 tram is fully air-conditioned and is the only travelling restaurant of its type in the world. A fine afternoon tea will be served onboard, featuring cucumber, and smoked salmon sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, petit fours and fresh fruit. Australian champagne, wine, beer, and soft drinks will also be served. Your one-hour City Circle trip will pass leafy gardens, trendy boutiques, elegant houses, and the city center. The Town Hall, Museum, National Art Gallery, War Memorial and Botanic Gardens will also be glimpsed during your 25-mile journey. You'll then continue to the Rialto Towers Observation Deck, which stands at a height of 830 feet. On a clear day, views extend beyond Westgate Bridge as far as the Dandenong Ranges to the east and Port Philip Bay to the south. You'll reboard Crystal Symphony during the late afternoon. Note: Although there is no commentary on the tramcar, the waiters will be happy to answer your questions Approximately 4 1/2 hours. |
