Your adventure will begin with a narrated flight by floatplane over the magnificent
2.3-million-acre Misty Fjords national Monument. Marvel at the granite cliffs rising
vertically from the fjords, countless waterfalls, forested mountains, pristine alpine
lakes and the abundant wildlife of one of North America's grandest unspoiled wilderness
areas. You'll also view massive glaciers with names like Soule, Through and Chickamin.
These moving rivers of ice, measuring up to 11 miles in length, are majestic remnants of
the ice age. A naturalist/guide will meet you on arrival at Hyder, which nestles among mountains at
the head of the fjord-like Portland Canal. As you explore this remote frontier community
by van, your guide will make the colorful tales of its pioneers come alive. Later, during your wilderness drive up the picturesque Salmon River Valley, keep watch for the bear, wolves, fox, marten, porcupine, eagles and ptarmigan, which frequent this area. From July until mid-September, black and brown bears can usually be seen from the wildlife viewing platform, feeding on the spawning salmon of fish Creek. A refreshing light snack and beverages will be provided for your enjoyment. Your return flight will feature with the idyllic wilderness setting of the Chickamin River Valley, or another rarely-seen regions of this wilderness monument. You'll want to follow the routing on your complimentary Flight Guide and map. What an experience! Approximately 3-1/2 hours. |
