Your stroll will begin within the historic district that was once the capital of
Russian America. After climbing the switch back trail to the top of Castle Hill, you'll
arrive at the site of the "1867 Lad Transfer Ceremony," where Alaska was
transferred from Russian ownership to the United States. You will then descend the long
stairway from the hill site and pass through Totem Square, which was once used as the
Russian Parade Grounds. Next, you'll walk past the Alaska Pioneer Home and see the Prospector Statue and
Russian Blockhouse as you enter the Russian Cemetery. This is Alaska's oldest recorded
cemetery where grave sites of early Russian missionaries and royalty can be found. As you weave past a selection of buildings, you will hear the history of the Russian
Cathedral and Bishop's House. You'll then follow the harbor shoreline past Victorian-style
homes, old churches, and the Sheldon Jackson College Campus, home to James Michener during
the writing of his book, "Alaska." Ahead lies the Sitka National Historical park where flat walking trails lined with
authentic totems guide you through the lush Tongass national Forest. Then after crossing a
bridge over Indian River, you'll learn interesting facts about the rain forest ecosystem
and the local flora and fauna. Beyond the forest is the swamp-like muskeg soil, which is
home to much of Southeast Alaska's bird, plant and wild berry life. Along the riverside muskeg trail, you'll meet representatives from the Alaska Raptor
Rehabilitation Center, who will acquaint you with their work. As you explore the Raptor
Center's grounds, there will be opportunities to photograph bald eagles, owls, and other
birds of prey. This program will conclude with a return by bus to our tender landing pier from where
you may proceed directly to the ship or continue to explore Sitka independently. Approximately 2-1/2 hours. |
