Southeast Alaska boasts the largest population of bald eagles in the country. when
these majestic birds, and other raptors (birds of prey) are injured, they are taken to
Sitka's Raptor Center. Volunteer local Sitkans, supported by medical professionals, devote
countless hours feeding, caring for and rehabilitating these birds before releasing them
back into the wild. You'll be taken to the headquarters of this fine work for a brief
opportunity to view and photograph the clinic, gallery and mews housing the eagles and
other raptors. After reboarding your bus, you'll proceed along the highway bordering Sitka Sound to
view historical sites including the Russian Cemetery, Castle Hill and Blockhouse and
native Village areas. The Sitka National Historical Park, where the Battle of Alaska was
fought, will also be featured. Here, you'll discover fascinating cultural exhibits and see
native craftsmen working in their traditional totemic art forms. next you'll visit St.
Michael's Russian Orthodox Church, the Mother Cathedral for orthodoxy for all of America
and home of priceless artwork and icons. This program's rousing conclusion is an authentic Russian-style folk dance performed by
the New Archangel Dancers. Before reboarding the ship's tender, you may choose to independently stroll through the
museum in the Centennial Building, browse through the Russian Bishop's House or perhaps do
a little shopping. Approximately 3 hours. |
