After tendering ashore, the flavor of the early Russian period is revealed as you
explore Alaska's most historic city by local bus. an informative guide will direct your
attention to the Russian Cemetery, Blockhouse and Castle hill, site of the land transfer. Saint Michael's Cathedral, with its distinctive onion-shaped dome, was America's first
Russian orthodox church. Provided there isn't a service in progress, you'll survey its
collection of priceless icons and religious artifacts. The Sitka National Historical Park hosts totem-lined walking trails and cultural
exhibits where Alaskan natives handcraft traditional art forms. There will be ample time
to visit the cultural center before you reboard your bus. The excursion's real highlight awaits at the Centennial Building adjacent to our tender
landing pier. Watch as the New Archangel Dancers perform a spirited, live performance of
Russian-style dances for your enjoyment. Following the show, you may peruse the Centennial Building's museum, explore the
Russian Bishop's House, visit the main shopping district or return directly to the nearby
tender pier. Approximately 2-1/2 hours. |
