A Walk Through History

Your coach awaits to transport you past the Columbus monument and leafy boulevard of Las Ramblas to the old quarter where you walk will begin. Old Barcelona is build around Taber Hill, which is little more than a mound in an otherwise flat city. The Gothic Quarter, which is surrounded by the remains of Roman walls, lies atop this undulation. Beyond the ramparts, very little has changed for centuries. A 12th-century medieval courtyard, unaltered to this day, lies beyond the entrance door to the Bishop's Palace. Take time to study the frescoes on the building's facade which date back to the 18th Century. Its triple recess windows and large "flamigero" windows are of 14th-century design. Construction of Barcelona's cathedral began in 1298 under the patronage of Jaime II. From this masterpiece, you'll leave the gothic Quarter and pass the Sagrada Familia, Antoni Gaudi's striking unfinished creation. Your walk will continue to Guell Park, yet another Gaudi masterpiece. This well-loved outdoor retreat was originally planned as a garden city, but happily this development was never completed. From this verdant oasis, you'll return by coach to Crystal Symphony. Approximately 3-1/2 hours. |
