Thursday Island, Australia

The most popular of the Torres Strait Islands, Thursday Island is part of a Land bridge that once joined Australia and Asia.  It was once a major producer of mother-of-pearl, and its pearlers' cemeteries show what a hazardous occupation this was.   Today this square mile of tropical sands and balmy breezes is one of the most laid back places in Australia.
