Spain graced its island outpost in the Mediterranean with the magnificent Gothic cathedral, and Bellver Castle overlooking the port. Yet the Spaniards were the last of a 2,600-year series of inhabitants. Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals and Moors all came before, and crude stone towers still remain from the prehistoric Talayot civilization.
