Lorient takes its name from L'Orient ("the East"), for it grew wealthy on trade with India.  The dramatic, wave-washed coastline is perfectly paired with the rugged beauty of the Breton countryside, where the dense low vegetation in marked where and there with stone-age megaliths, medieval castles and Renaissance villages in polished granite.
